SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California Gov. Gavin Newsom has signed a bill that extends the deadline for California students to submit their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to May 2.
AB 1887, introduced by Assemblywoman Cervantes (D-Riverside) quickly passed through the California Legislature last week and made its way to the desk of the governor.
The bill states most programs under the Student Aid Commission, including the DREAM Act application, one of the prominent programs in the state.
Thousands of students with undocumented parents have faced challenges with the revised version of the FAFSA. Since the launch of the application on Dec. 31, 2023, the form has seen six delays or revisions in order to simplify the process.
Students should look into their decision deadlines for schools they have applied to as most colleges and universities have a choice deadline of May 1st.
